Understanding a diamond's quality characteristics is straightforward and simple. John Macintyre & Son's diamond education is designed to answer all your questions.
…In just a few minutes you'll know everything you need to know to find your perfect diamond.
CUT
A diamond cut is a style or design guide used when shaping a diamond. Cut does not refer to shape (brilliant, princess, pear, oval) but the symmetry of a diamond. The most popular of diamond cuts is the modern round brilliant, whose facet arrangements and proportions have been perfected by mathematical and empirical analysis.
COLOUR
Only F/G colour, the less colour in a diamond, the rarer it is! Diamonds are graded on a scale from D-Z, based on their colourlessness. At John Macintyre & Son, we never sell diamonds below F/G colour, which falls into a rare-white category.
CLARITY
All diamonds have identifying characteristics, otherwise known as "inclusions". The greater the number of these, the lower the clarity grade. At John Macintyre & Son, we only stock VS1 diamonds, which means no inclusions visible to the naked eye.
CARAT
Does size matter? The larger the diamond, the rarer it is, as larger diamonds are found less frequently in nature. A diamond's size is measured in "carat weight". One carat can also be described as 100 points, and weighs around 1/5 of a gram.

What is a certificated Diamond?
A diamond certificate, also called a diamond grading report, is created by a team of gemmologists. The diamond is evaluated and measured using trained eyes, a jeweller's loupe, a microscope, and other industry tools. A completed certificate includes an analysis of the diamond's dimensions, clarity, colour, symmetry and other characteristics.
Why are some JOHN MACINTYRE & SON diamonds certificated and others are not?
We are so confident with our diamond quality we have certificated stones amongst our core range to let you compare with our own quality.
Why is a 1.00ct diamond ring more expensive than one I have seen in another shop?
Diamonds are priced on quality, the higher the quality the higher the price. We pride ourselves on our quality and rigorously search for the best prices to pass on to our customers ensuring the best sparkle forever!
Why is a multiple stone ring of greater carat cheaper than a single stone of a smaller carat weight?
The larger the diamond the rarer it becomes, therefore the price ratio rises more than the weight ratio.
Do we sell conflict diamonds?
No every diamond we stock goes through the Kimberly Process ensuring diamonds are from registered mines.
Do our diamond rings come with a guarantee?
Yes, all our diamond rings are designed to last forever; we offer a one month and six month free check up.
